Don Quixote de la Mancha is a fictional
character from Classical Spanish literature, created by the
legendary writer Miguel de Cervantes. In this fable, Don Quixote
endeavors through life searching for his elusive love, Dulcinea.
In this love story, the protagonist fights against windmills,
hallucinating that they are dragons while valiantly wearing his
armor and firmly holding his lance, all of this as the result of
his voracious reading.
This painting
was a personalized commission created for a collector who loves
the story of Don Quijote and wanted a painting that represented
her. Since she is a student of classical Spanish literature, I
chose to hide a bookshelf containing the two tomes of the Don
Quixote books, which were published in 1605 and 1615
respectively. In the foreground is the armored arm of Don
Quixote, holding his lance while looking menacingly at a
windmill in the distance.
Footprints can
be found throughout the painting symbolic of both Quixote’s
journey and the professional journey of the collector for whom I
created this painting. Finally, if you pay close attention to
the books on the shelf, they include numbers that are of great
significance to the collector, adding to the personalization of
this painting. |
